Here is some info from the web (please check for accuracy):
The original Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba, introduced in 1954 by a 17-note instrument traditionally tuned to G major. Known for its rich, resonant sound, it features 17 metal tines on a Kiaat wood box, typically with a range from B3 to D6. It was the first commercial kalimba produced.
Key features of the original Treble Kalimba include:
- Tuning: Standard G major (starting on B3, the 3rd of G).
- Design: 17 steel tines on a resonant wooden box, often with 5 painted tines for navigation.
- History: Developed in the 1950s, this model was heavily promoted in the 1960s and influenced many modern 17-note Chinese kalimbas.
- Sound: Known for a bright, sustained tone and a, generally, 2.5-octave range.
The Treble is frequently considered the "standard" model for Western, diatonic music and was used by artists such as Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire.
